World Book Day

World Book Day get youngsters reading

Well-read pupils from a leading North Yorkshire School have been inspired to share a story on World Book Day (Thurs 7 March) thanks to our award-winning independent bookshop.

Over 100 pupils from Cundall Manor School visited us across 2 days to receive a hands-on lesson in all things to coincide with World Book Day.

Key Stage 2 pupils visited the award-winning White Rose Book Café for a series of interactive and fun workshops including story-time, working with staff at the shop and writing their own story. The pupils then had the chance to enjoy choosing a book as part of a further nationwide initiative.

Amanda Kirby, Joint Head at the school, said: “World Book Day is one of the highlights of our term and it is a fabulous opportunity to encourage a life-long love of reading.”

“For many of our pupils, this is a great way to get interested in a new author or try a genre which they may not have tried before.”

She added: “The fact that we can work with a local bookshop of such high quality who inspire such a love of reading is a great asset for the school.”

Sue Lake, Owner of the White Rose Book Café, said: “It was lovely to see Cundall Manor children sharing their excitement about books and stories in a proper bookshop.”

She added: “World Book Day is all about reading for pleasure and the variety of books they chose reflects the quality and variety of childrens’ books today.”

To round off the day the children enjoyed a homemade cake and refreshments from the café.

Thank you to Mr P Swalwell, Publicity Officer, Cundall Manor School

Walk – North York Moors National Park.

Levisham Moor and the Hole of Horcum

Be prepared for grand landscapes and big views on this North York Moors classic. Starting with the dramatic panorama from Saltergate over the Hole of Horcum, the 5-mile scenic walk follows a prominent track over Levisham Moor, past important archaeological remains. There’s a possible diversion to the stunning viewpoint of Skelton Tower, after which the route drops into the rocky ravine of Dundale Griff and returns along the valley to the Hole of Horcum, climbing back out at Saltergate. 5 miles or 7 miles.
