BLOOMIN’ Cabaret Evening Launch~ Thursday May 23, 7pm to 9pm
Radio 4 poet Kate Fox is teaming up with White Rose BookCafe TO HOST a
series of live literature events featuring a mixture of writers, singers and
comedians. Under the guise of Bloomin’ Cabaret Evenings; where words
flourish, there will be three further Bloomin’ evenings in 2013. Hosted by the
talented, 37 year old Kate Fox, the launch of Bloomin’ Cabaret’’ events
will be on Thursday May 23, at White Rose BookCafe, 7pm to 9pm, tickets
£5 includes refreshments.
Kate moved to Sowerby eighteen months ago with her husband
Alfie Crow, 48, whose first crime novel “Rant” has just been released. She has been a professional poet since 2006 and a regular topical poet for Radio 4’s Saturday Live since
2007. Kate says:“I used to run live literature events when I lived in Newcastle, because I’m a stand up poet which is a cross between a poet and a stand up comedian and I enjoy seeing words come to life on the page. One of the attractions of Thirsk for us was that it still has a great independent bookshop so it’s great to be joining up with one and
experimenting with a type of night that is partly about books, but partly about words of all sorts. We want it to be down to earth, fun and welcoming, hence the “Bloomin”- it will be a proper Yorkshire night. I don’t think Thirsk has hosted an event quite like this before and we hope it will become a regular thing”.
Sue Lake, owner of the White Rose BookCafe said “ We are very excited to work with
Kate, to present the Bloomin’ Cabaret Evenings here in the BookCafe. The written, spoken and sung word will be presented in many different ways, and it will be a fun, light-hearted evening”. Future events this year will include a Crime Cabaret in July and a Christmas
On May 23 the line up will feature Bloomin’ songs from Holly Taymar and Christopher Bilton. Holly and Christopher are two Yorkshire-bred twenty-something’s with a talent for writing and arranging beautiful acoustic originals, featuring a multitude of genres – acoustic, folk, country, jazz, doo-wop and a hint of hip hop. Frank, intimate but never
anything less than stunningly delicate, these two Northerners invite you on a
journey into their world.
“Endearingly lovely…an autotune-free zone, if you’ve ever seen
them perform live, which I heartily recommend by the way, you’ll know they
really are THAT good…” Matt Seymour, BBC Raw Talent’.
Also Bloomin’ words and maybe mandolin playing, from local author Jonathan
Tulloch. Jonathan has written four novels. He has won numerous literary awards including the Betty Trask Prize (2000) and the J.B Priestley Award (2004). His first novel, The Season Ticket, was released as a major feature film under the title Purely Belter. He featured on the TLS list of the twenty best young writers. Jonathan’s newest children’s
book Mr McCool was published in July 2012 by Egmont.
Bloomin’ stand up comedy from Lydia Slack. Funny Women 2012 semi-finalist Lydia Slack is a
hill farmer’s daughter from the Peak District in North Derbyshire. Lydia gives
an entertaining insight into what it was like to grow up surrounded by hills, animals and not many people. Last but not least Bloomin’ stand up poetry and compering from Kate Fox, a Radio 4 regular, poet and comedian. She’s been Poet in Residence for the Great North Run, is shortly to be Poet in Residence for Glastonbury Festival and is taking a new show “Good Breeding” to this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival. “Funny, quirky and a wonderful writer” Sarah Millican.
